Alice! Health Promotion. (2026, January 07). What do Ben Wa balls do?. Go Ask Alice!, https://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/what-do-ben-wa-balls-do.

Dear Alice,

I saw Ben Wa balls in a sex store and it says they improve sexual pleasure by improving vaginal tone and can even be worn during sex — is this true? Do they work and are they pleasurable?

Dear Reader,

It's time to weigh in on pleasure. Ben Wa balls can boost sexual pleasure, though everyone’s experience is unique. They work by reinforcing the pelvic floor muscles, which can improve vaginal tone and control. Some people wear them during sex for a little extra thrill, while others may not find it as arousing. Read on to explore how Ben Wa balls work, how they can enhance pleasure, and what safety considerations to keep in mind.

What are Ben Wa balls?

Ben Wa balls (also called love balls, orgasm balls, or vaginal balls) are small, weighted balls that are designed to be inserted into the vagina. People use them for different reasons. Some use Ben Wa balls to add a little spark to their intimate life, while others may use them to strengthen their pelvic floor muscles.

Ben Wa balls come in different weights, sizes, and materials, such as metal, glass, silicone, or plastic. Most sets include two balls connected by a silicone or nylon cord, making them easy to insert, remove, and clean.

Can Ben Wa balls improve sexual pleasure?

Ben Wa balls can be used alongside Kegel exercises, which are a set of exercises involving simple movements that strengthen pelvic floor muscles. When the pelvic floor muscles become stronger, they help stabilize the bladder, bowel, and vaginal structures. So, using Ben Wa balls when doing Kegel exercises can improve bladder control and intensify orgasms. They’ve also been noted as helping boost sexual desire and increase vaginal lubrication.

This is how it works: when you insert Ben Wa balls into the vagina, your pelvic floor muscles contract to hold them in place. That extra resistance gives your muscles a gentle workout. The stronger those muscles get, the more control and pleasure you may feel.

That said, research has shown that the effects of Ben Wa balls may vary from person to person. Some people notice better sexual experiences while other people don’t experience much change at all.

Can Ben Wa balls be used during sex?

Ben Wa balls can be used during pre- or post-penetration sexual play to add some spice to solo or partnered play. When placed inside the vagina, they can create sensations that some people find arousing. The longer they’re in, the more the body may respond. The experience is similar to a slow build rather than an instant climax. While nothing else should be penetrating the vagina when using Ben Wa balls, you can pair them with a vibrator on the clitoris or around the vaginal opening for extra stimulation.

Are there any risks when using Ben Wa balls?

There are some risks when using this sexual accoutrement. Ben Wa balls aren’t meant to move in and out like a dildo. Thrusting them back and forth can cause discomfort or even injury. Additionally, while mixing sex toys can be fun, it’s best not to insert anything else vaginally while the balls are inside. If they’re used roughly or for too long, they can cause irritation or injury, such as vaginal tears, swelling, bleeding, or infection.

Another note, Ben Wa Balls aren’t made for anal play. Compared to anal beads, Ben Wa balls don’t have a sturdy removal handle that’s designed for the anus and rectum. This means that it’s easier for Ben Wa balls to slip too far and get stuck in the rectum. If you’re curious about anal stimulation, it’s best to stick with toys designed for that purpose.

How can you clean your Ben Wa balls?

Materials like metal, glass, plastic, or silicone can be washed with antibacterial soap and warm water. To disinfect, soak them for about ten minutes in a diluted bleach solution, which is about one-fourth cup of bleach with about two and one-fourth cups of water. If they’re not battery-powered, you can also pop them in the top rack of the dishwasher. Cleaning the Ben Wa balls is key to reduce any risk of vaginal infections.

With mindful use and proper care, Ben Wa balls can turn pelvic fitness into a feel-good ritual with extra pleasure.
